Become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor
The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Indiana University Southeast is a challenging 60-credit hour graduate program designed to prepare students for licensure as mental health counselors in the state of Indiana.* Combining in-depth coursework and supervised clinical experience, the program equips students to assess, support, and guide individuals facing emotional, psychological, and interpersonal challenges.

Hybrid Format Designed for Working Adults
This full-time, cohort-based program features a hybrid delivery format that includes both face-to-face and online instruction, making it ideal for busy professionals. Students benefit from the flexibility of online coursework and the connection of in-person learning, building a strong community with faculty and peers. Over two years, candidates progress through coursework and clinical experiences together, fostering collaboration and consistent support.
Clinical Experience That Meets Licensure Standards
The program includes 9 credit hours of supervised clinical experience, including a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship, aligned with state licensure requirements. These experiences provide essential hands-on training in real-world counseling settings, reinforcing classroom learning and preparing students for professional practice.
Professional Expectations and Program Requirements
Students in the MCMHC program must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate professionalism, leadership, critical thinking, and multicultural awareness throughout the program. Success in the program depends not only on academic achievement, but also on ethical behavior, collaboration, and commitment to professional standards. Students are expected to behave in accordance with the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics.
Licensure Pathway
Graduates of the MCMHC program are eligible to apply for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Indiana. The program meets all educational requirements established by the Indiana Professional Licensing Board. Although IU Southeast cannot guarantee licensure, faculty provide guidance and resources for students pursuing licensure in Indiana and other states.*
Currently, the MCMHC program is pursuing accreditation by the Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP). This accreditation will allow graduates to meet licensing requirements in several states.
*Note: The program does not currently meet licensure requirements for the state of Kentucky. If CACREP accreditation is granted, it would then meet those requirements.
