Inaugural Faculty Research/Creativity Day showcases scholarship and impact

21st September 2019

(NEW ALBANY, Ind.)–Ever wonder what IU Southeast instructors do when they’re not teaching?

The answer will be revealed on Friday, September 27 at the inaugural IU Southeast Faculty Research/Creativity day, a showcase of scholarly endeavor for one and all.

Faculty from every school will present their most recent and/or compelling work. Students and community members will vote for the most outstanding research or creative activity.

The event resembles the annual IU Southeast Student Conference, but featuring faculty instead. It’s a great opportunity not only for students to see what their instructors are up to, but for faculty to learn more about the specializations, pre-occupations, obsessions and visions of their colleagues.

The Faculty Research/Creativity Day is part of Indiana University’s 200 Festival, a series of events across the state kicking off IU’s year-long Bicentennial celebration. (A full list of events may be found on the festival website here: https://200.iu.edu/events/200-festival.html.) When the Bicentennial organizing committee polled students about the kinds of events they’d like to see, there was a lot of interest in faculty research, according to Diane Wille, dean of graduate studies and research.

“The goal of the Faculty Research and Creative Activity Day is to celebrate the excellence of our faculty research and creative work,” Wille said. “We also want to provide a venue for students, the IUS community and the local community to interact with our faculty and learn about the research and creative activity they do.”

Some of the topics presented either orally or in posters include:

Bradford Griggs and Melanie Hughes Using 3D Digital Pedagogy to Explore the Past
Ann Niren Ben Harney: The Most Famous Louisville Musician You’ve Never Heard Of
Donna Stallard Making The IU Southeast Stained Glass Window
David Taylor The History of Water Lilies Through Time and Space

The award luncheon follows the presentations. In addition to awards for the faculty scholars, there will be a trivia game about IU Southeast, and prizes will be given to the table with the highest correct scores.
