Duke Energy Nonprofit Academy to strengthen nonprofits serving southern Indiana

23rd April 2019

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Indiana University Southeast will host the Duke Energy Nonprofit Academy on Friday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University Center Hoosier Room. This free professional development conference for nonprofits is made possible by a $17,500 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation.

The event will feature keynote speakers Mark Hogg of WaterStep and Carrie Syberg of Actors Theatre, as well as a fundraising session with Sarah K. Nathan of the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and a board development session with Susan Smith, former executive director of GuardiaCare.

A panel discussion with area funders on preparing effective grant proposals will feature Jerry Finn, executive director of the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County; Lisa Huber, government and community relations manager for Duke Energy; Kent Lanum, president and CEO of the Paul Ogle Foundation; and Linda Speed, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana.

Additional sessions will address nonprofit leadership, strategic planning, collaboration, technology and marketing. A full list of speakers and breakout sessions can be found online.

“Duke Energy is honored to join IU Southeast to offer this free professional development opportunity to area nonprofits,” said Lisa Huber, Duke Energy government and community relations manager. “The academy is about connecting expertise from leaders in nonprofit management and capacity building with our region’s charitable groups to help them fulfill their missions.”

The purpose of the academy is to strengthen nonprofits that provide critical services and improve quality of life in southern Indiana. Nonprofits located in or serving southern Indiana will be given first access to registration for the full conference, which includes breakfast, lunch, keynote speakers, breakout sessions and a closing networking opportunity. A “breakout session only” track will allow additional nonprofits, including those not located in or serving southern Indiana, to take part in the conference through breakout sessions scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Registration is required by May 1 for this event, and seating is limited. Participants can register online. For more information about the academy, contact Brittany Schmidt at (812) 941-2664 or britmurr@ius.edu.
