15th October 2018

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – It is with great regret we announce that J. Robert Shine, CPA and long-time donor and friend of Indiana University Southeast, passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital.

Shine, an IU Southeast Chancellor’s Medallion recipient, was born and raised in New Albany and graduated from New Albany High School. He received a Bachelor of Science with distinction from Indiana University and was later awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law degree by IU. Shine served on the IU Southeast Board of Advisors from 1979 to 1984. He also received the Distinguished Entrepreneur Award from the Indiana University School of Business and was a huge fan of IU basketball.

Shine’s giving to IU and IU Southeast spanned more than three decades. He established scholarships in his company’s name, Monroe Shine & Co., Inc., for students in the IU Southeast School of Business and the IU Kelley School of Business. The IU Southeast scholarship supports students whose concentration is accounting and who plan to work in southern Indiana. Shine was passionate about supporting his local community. As an IU Southeast Chancellor’s Medallion recipient, he supported IU Southeast’s annual effort for the Chancellor’s Medallion Scholarship for juniors and seniors across disciplines.

“Bob Shine was an exemplary and generous man as demonstrated by his decades of giving and support of our university,” said IU Southeast Chancellor Ray Wallace. “He will be greatly missed by the IU Southeast community.”

Shine was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Mary Ellin “Pindy” Shine, and his parents, Patty and Ira James Shine.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Market Street Chapel of Naville & Seabrook Funeral Homes Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.
