Healthy IU offers new classes and programs for faculty and staff

Healthy IU, Indiana University’s workplace wellness program, has new offerings. New classes and programs are free for full-time faculty and staff and their spouses. Classes and programs include:

“Sustain & Move IU!”

This is a three-week long university-wide challenge, including walking, bicycling and using public transportation or carpooling to help with staying active and lowering carbon footprints.

Workstation Movements

When: Tuesday, September 11, 15-minute meeting

Where: Your workspace

Researchers say “Sitting is the new smoking.” So how can we move more throughout the day? Gather a group of co-workers and Healthy IU will come to your workstation for a 15-minute movement break. Each participant will receive a resistance band and will learn some creative ways (no fitness facility required) to sit less, move more, and feel great.

Tai Chi for Health

When: Tuesdays, October 23-November 27, 5:00-5:45 p.m.

Where: Ogle Center, Room 069

This class introduces the mindful, slower-paced movements and breathing of Tai Chi. The movements have been shown to:

  • Improve muscular strength, stability, and overall health
  • Release tension in stiff joints and muscles
  • Boost mental well-being through relaxation

Personal Nutrition Counseling

When: Tuesday, October 30, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Where: UC-124

In this session, a registered dietitian can help you develop a plan to achieve your health goals. Sessions include personalized nutrition education on any topic of interest, including weight loss, heart-healthy eating, digestive health, and more. One-on-one nutritional counseling is available at no charge for full-time employees and their spouses by appointment.

The Benefits of Chocolate

When: Tuesday, October 30, Noon-1:00 p.m.

Where: UC-121

Chocolate lovers, this one’s for you. Did you know that eating chocolate can lead to health benefits like lower blood pressure and improved brain health? In this presentation, learn about the history of chocolate, why it’s actually good for you, and how to choose the best kinds. Samples will be provided.

Breastfeeding in the Workplace (Online)

When: Thursday, September 20, Noon-1:00 p.m.

If you are a mother who is breastfeeding, it’s important to know the options that are available to you at work. This session will provide helpful breastfeeding tips in the workplace, as well as information regarding IU breastfeeding support and benefits.

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes (Online)

When: Wednesdays, October 3, 2018 – January 23, 2019, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

If you’re looking for guidance and support with making small lifestyle changes to prevent Type 2 diabetes, this program is for you! In this program, you will learn strategies that fit your life in an expert-led, confidential, small-group setting. Examples of sessions in this 16-week program:

  • Simple lifestyle changes resulting in a healthy you
  • Food choices that make you feel great
  • How to take charge of what’s around you
  • Group motivation and individual mentoring
