IU Southeast names 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – IU Southeast announces Joey Rivera as the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Rivera will receive the award during the 2016 Commencement ceremony at Freedom Hall at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville on Monday, May 9.

Rivera earned a bachelor’s degree from IU Southeast in 1993, and he holds a doctorate in software engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He has more than 25 years of experience providing leadership within the software engineering domain, and he has 30 years of military service, ranging from a private in the U.S. Marine Corps to an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel. He is currently assigned to the U.S. Cyber Command, J6, and provides expertise in cyber warfare.

He is the CEO of Rivera Group, and he leads the company’s research and development team. He also serves on the board of directors for One Southern Indiana and the Kentucky and Indiana chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America, Inc. Additionally, Rivera has been supporting Renaissance Academy in Clarksville, Indiana.

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors outstanding IU Southeast alumni who have made significant contributions to the community and are leaders in their professions. Each year, this award is presented to the recipient at Commencement. The following criteria are considered when selecting a recipient:

  • Personal and professional accomplishments
  • Community service
  • Post-graduation university involvement

Cynthia Torp, B.A. Fine Arts ’84, was the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Torp is the owner and president of Solid Light, Inc. in Louisville.
