IU Southeast names 2016 Chancellor’s Medallion honorees

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Indiana University Southeast is proud to announce the recipients of the 2016 Chancellor’s Medallion.

Patrick A. Shoulders, IU Trustee, and Ed Clere, Indiana state representative, will be honored April 9 at the 2016 Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner at Horseshoe Southern Indiana.

The Chancellor’s Medallion is the highest honor presented by the Chancellor of Indiana University Southeast. It is given to individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the university and to the community; have given their talents in the promotion of human welfare and community well being; and who, through their integrity, sensitivity, and commitment, serve as models for students and alumni of IU Southeast. To date, 41 of these awards have been presented.

Pat Shoulders is a partner with the law firm of Ziemer, Stayman, Weitzel & Shoulders, where he concentrates his practice in Litigation. He received his undergraduate degree in English from Indiana University in 1975 and his law degree from IU in 1978, graduating magna cum laude. Admitted in both Indiana and Kentucky, Pat is an accomplished trial lawyer with sub-specialties in school law and appellate practice.

Pat has served IU with distinction and has been a Trustee of IU since Jan. 1, 2002. He is a past national President of the Indiana University Alumni Association and the IU College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Association. He also currently serves as a Director of the IU Foundation and is a past member of the Board of Governors of the IU Center on Philanthropy and the Indiana Public Policy Institute.

Pat has served the legal profession as President of the Evansville Bar Association, as Chair of the Litigation and Citizenship Education Committees of the Indiana State Bar Association, as Chair of the Fellows of the Indiana Bar Foundation, and as a member of the State Bar Associations Board of Governors from 1998-2000. He is the recipient of the Evansville Bar Association’s highest honor—the James Bethel Gresham Award, in recognition of his service to the legal profession, and is a distinguished barrister in The Indiana Lawyer publications.

Pat’s volunteer activities in southwestern Indiana have been numerous. He served as President of the Evansville Parks Foundation, Museum of Arts & Sciences, and the YMCA, Chair of the WNIN Auction, Founder & Director of the Arts Fest 12K River Run, a Member of the Board of Park Commissioners and a member of the Evansville Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. He has served as a Civic Theatre Board Member, Public Defender Commissioner, and Member of the Mayor’s Unification Study Committee. His volunteerism has earned him the Kentucky Colonel, Sagamore of the Wabash and the Indiana Bar’s President’s Awards.

An IU Southeast alumnus, State Representative Ed Clere is serving his fourth term in the Indiana House of Representatives, having been first elected in 2008. He represents most of Floyd County, including the city of New Albany. Clere is the chairman of the House Public Health Committee. He also serves on the House Education and Public Policy committees.

Clere is a legislative member of the board of Indiana’s CHOICE program, a state-funded program that helps seniors and people with disabilities stay in their home and avoid institutional care. He is also the legislative member of the board of the Indiana School for the Deaf. He has served as a legislative member of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites Corporation and the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission.

Clere serves on the board of the Cardinal Ritter Birthplace Foundation, Indiana Landmarks, the Indiana Minority Health Coalition and the YMCA of Southern Indiana. He is a past board member of Develop New Albany (the city’s Main Street organization) and New Albany-Floyd County Habitat for Humanity. Representative Clere is co-chair of the Indiana Skills2Compete Coalition. He serves on the Floyd County Community Corrections Advisory Board, the LifeSpan Resources Advisory Council and the Indiana University Southeast (IUS) Social Sciences Advisory Board. He coaches youth soccer for Southern Indiana United. He is a 2006 graduate and member of Leadership Southern Indiana.

The Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Horseshoe Southern Indiana. Proceeds from the Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner go to the Chancellor’s Medallion Scholarship program.
