Renovations are complete and a grand opening ceremony is scheduled for The Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders Laboratory for Nursing Education at IU Southeast.

The dedication ceremony and open house are scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the Life Sciences building at IU Southeast. In addition to a ribbon cutting ceremony, the event will feature remarks from Interim Dean of Nursing Jacquelyn Reid, Chancellor Ray Wallace and Judge Carlton Sanders. Following the ceremony, the simulation labs will open for tours and full-scale demonstrations performed by IU Southeast nursing students.

Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders announced their generous half-million dollar gift in March 2013 to support renovations to the existing eight-bed nursing lab.

“I talked to a lot of people in the community, and everyone indicated this is the best school around as far as nursing programs go,” Judge Carlton Sanders said in an interview after the gift was announced. “Sue and I felt that if we could improve it, we should. It was our desire to make the best even better.”

After more than a year of renovations, the lab now has three high-fidelity simulation rooms: an adult simulation room that allows students to become proficient in performing complex procedures; a pediatric simulation room where students practice caring for children while interacting with someone playing the role of a parent; and a birthing simulation room that allows students to prepare to assist in labor and delivery.

The Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders Laboratory for Nursing Education also features a skills lab, which houses 12 beds with mid-level simulation mannequins where students practice basic nursing techniques.

“This lab will provide nursing students with the opportunity to practice procedures that are needed to begin providing nursing care as sophomores, and return to the labs for various experiences as juniors and seniors,” Reid said.

Opportunities for interviews, photos and video will be available at the open house. For more information about the Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders Laboratory for Nursing Education, or the dedication ceremony and open house, contact the School of Nursing at 812-941-2283.
