NEW ALBANY, IN, (July 11, 2012) – Indiana University Southeast is proud to announce the recipients of the 2012 Chancellor’s Medallion.
Donald McMahel, longtime music educator, and Michael Naville, attorney and managing partner at Lorch & Naville, will be honored Oct. 27 at the 2012 Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner at Horseshoe Southern Indiana.
The Chancellor’s Medallion is the highest honor presented by the Chancellor of Indiana University Southeast. It is given to individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the university and to the community, have given their talents in the promotion of human welfare and community well-being, and who – through their integrity, sensitivity, and commitment – serve as models for students and alumni of IU Southeast.
McMahel
A New Albany native, McMahel is committed to his lifelong love of music and performance. McMahel received a four-year scholarship and attended the Indiana University School of Music where he received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees. During his college career he was principal clarinet of the IU Symphonic Band and the Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Opera Orchestra.
His academic career was followed by a job at Western Kentucky University where he was assistant director of both the Marching and Concert Bands. In 1956, he was promoted to be director of the Concert Band while also teaching as an associate professor of music. After leaving WKU in 1957, he spent a two-year stint at Texas A&M before returning back to Southern Indiana in 1959. His return to the New Albany Floyd County School Corporation would prove to be long and fulfilling. Until his retirement in 1993, he taught music theory, was an assistant director for the New Albany High School band, directed more than 30 high school musicals, taught at several elementary schools, organized annual music festivals for bands, orchestras, and choirs, and served as the fine arts assistant to the superintendent for 10 years.
McMahel received the IU Southeast Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award for teaching in 1975 and the Lifetime Arts Achievement Award from the Arts Council of Southern Indiana in 2005. McMahel has also done extensive work with the IU Southeast music program. Beginning in 1963, McMahel taught music appreciation and served on the planning committee for the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and community center. After his retirement in 1993, McMahel partnered with James Poteet, a former student of his at WKU, to start the IU Southeast Concert Band, which to this day retains 22 of its very first original members. He is also associate director for the University Orchestra.
Naville
After graduating from Indiana University Southeast in 1973 with a degree in political science and receiving his doctor of jurisprudence degree from the University of Louisville in 1976, Naville joined his father’s, Herbert F. Naville, law practice. It merged to become Lorch & Naville in 1987, and Naville became managing partner in 1992, a title that he has held ever since, specializing in Adoption, Business Organization, Land Use & Zoning, and Limited Liability laws.
In addition to his law practices, Naville is in a number of leadership positions. He was listed in Who’s Who in Business and has been a long-standing community leader. He is in a number of positions on the Indiana State and Floyd County Bar Association and Southern Indiana Estate Planning Council. From 1989 to 1976 he served as president of St. Elizabeth’s Southern Indiana Maternity Home.
Naville was president of the Indiana University Southeast Alumni Association Board of Advisors from 2010-12. In 1995, he was appointed as a U.S. Magistrate District Court Judge for the Southern District of Indiana, and voted “Best Attorney” in the Evening News and Tribune’s community poll in 1998 and 1999. He was awarded the IU Southeast Alumni Award of Excellence in 2003 and the IU Southeast Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009.

The Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at Horseshoe Southern Indiana. Tickets are $100 per person. The event is presented by Geo.
