IU Southeast students team with community group to raise Down syndrome awareness

15th September 2011

NEW ALBANY, IN (Sept. 14, 2011) – An Indiana University Southeast student group is co-hosting the 3rd annual “Celebrate Our Capabilities Talent Show and Walk” to promote positive awareness for individuals with Down syndrome.

Allies, an IU Southeast student group whose goal is to create alliances in the community to increase awareness of Down syndrome and other disabilities, has joined forces with the Down Syndrome Support Association of Southern Indiana for the 2011 walk and talent show.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center at IU Southeast. Following registration, the walk begins at 11 a.m. and the talent show starts at 1 p.m.

About 600 people have already registered for the event, according to Kevin Evans, Allies vice president. In addition to the walk and talent show, several vendors and community groups will be on hand. Groups attending the event include Earth and Fire Pottery, Clark County Red Cross, YMCA of Southern Indiana, and Rauch-First Steps.

Evans believes these events are an important way to increase community of awareness of all disabilities, including Down syndrome.

“We hope to bring families with ties to Down syndrome to our campus to help raise awareness of Down syndrome, while also promoting the capabilities of these individuals,” he said.
