17th November 2010

NEW ALBANY, IN (Nov. 9, 2010) – Indiana University Southeast Chancellor Sandra R. Patterson-Randles has been named to the board of directors at the Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs.

The Backside Learning Center is the nation’s only comprehensive educational facility at a racetrack and enhances the lives of equine workers by providing education, life skill resources, and a welcoming community.

With her appointment, Patterson-Randles was offered an opportunity to combine two of her life’s passions: education and horses.

“The idea of having someone with such a strong educational background and an enthusiasm for thoroughbred racing is very unique,” said Sally Troutman, president of the Backside Learning Center board of directors.

The Backside Learning Center, with Jennifer Hoert as executive director, serves more than 800 horsemen and women each year by providing programs ranging from English as a Second Language and citizenship class to money management and tax assistance. The organization also hosts game nights, art classes, and music classes to help instill a sense of community while backside workers are practicing their language and social skills.

“The Backside Learning Center provides some of the hardest working members of thoroughbred racing with an opportunity to enhance their personal and professional development,” Patterson-Randles said. “I am honored to be a part of this program and to watch these talented workers grow and expand their horizons both on and off the track.”

Patterson-Randles will serve on the board for a three-year term. According to Troutman, her expertise in strategic planning and prudent financing will be invaluable to the group.
