Duke Energy creates endowed scholarship honoring Kevin Hammersmith for IU Southeast

NEW ALBANY, IN, (Dec. 7, 2012) – Indiana University Southeast is honored to announce the creation of the Kevin Nelson Hammersmith scholarship in partnership with Duke Energy through the Duke Energy Foundation.

The University held a luncheon Monday, Dec. 3, to introduce the scholarship and honor Hammersmith, a former Duke Energy employee and IU Southeast Board of Advisors member.

The Duke Energy Foundation donated $25,000 to begin the fund in Hammersmith’s name. The scholarship will be awarded annually to students in the School of Natural Science who are majoring in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or math.

Hammersmith, the former Director of Government and Community Relations at Duke, passed away in 2011. He was instrumental in shaping the Southern Indiana community through his involvement and contributions to many local organizations.

He was a member of the IU Southeast Board of Advisors for six years, and he showed unwavering support for education and the mission of the University.
